Capilano Maritime Design Ltd. is a full service naval architecture and marine engineering design firm located in North Vancouver, BC. The company was originally incorporated in British Columbia by Mark Mulligan in 1994 as Sea to Sky Cruise Company Ltd. The name was changed in 2007 to Capilano Maritime Design Ltd. when Principal Naval Architect, Chris Mulder joined the firm. The company offers naval architecture, marine survey, and marine engineering design services.

Capilano Maritime Design Ltd. has a good combination of many years of seagoing and shipbuilding practical experience in the commercial marine industry backed up by very strong design and analytical capabilities. The company’s focus is on providing engineering services for projects involving all manner of workboats including tugs, barges, crewboats, marine construction vessels, and ferries. Capilano Maritime offers simple, innovative solutions to complex problems in the marine industry.

Principals

Mark J Mulligan P.Eng., President

Mark Mulligan is President and founding partner of Capilano Maritime Design Ltd. and is a Naval Architect by profession. Mark holds an honours degree in Naval Architecture from the University of Strathclyde in Scotland as well as a Shipbuilding apprenticeship from Australia. He has logged considerable sea time on deep-sea, sub-sea and coastal vessels.

Since graduation, his life has been spent both working on board and designing vessels for mainly the offshore oil and the tug and barge industries, representing a good blend of practical and theoretical experience.

The first industry that Mark worked in after graduation was the Offshore Oil sector where he worked on the design of sub-sea vehicles and surface support vessels involved in deep water oil exploration and production. His time with this industry also included a year at sea as a sub-sea technician manning deep diving vessels.

Mark spent the next 20 years with the West Coast’s major tug and barge company as their Senior Naval Architect and later Technical Manager. His responsibilities there included designing new vessels and major modifications, construction supervision in Canada and China, salvage operations and liaison with regulatory bodies. His designs included new tugs and barges, a major inland waters ro-ro ferry and coastal ATB truck ferries.

The most recent 7 years, before co-founding Capilano Maritime, were spent as Senior Naval Architect with a major consulting firm in Vancouver producing designs and world-wide technical support again mainly for the tug and barge industries.

Chris Mulder, P.Eng. Principal Naval Architect

Chris is a Professional Engineer registered in British Columbia and holds both an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering (naval architecture option) from the University of British Columbia and a masters degree in marine technology from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in the United Kingdom. He has been working in the marine industry since 1988 including participation in a graduate training program with Brown & Root, U.K. in the offshore oil and gas industry during the early 1990s. Chris’s time with Brown and Root included secondments to steel jacket fabricators RGC Offshore in Scotland, marine pipelayers and offshore construction contractors European Marine Contractors in the Netherlands, and the design team for the Hibernia oil platform off Newfoundland, Canada. His time overseas was then followed by 13 years of design experience working for Robert Allan Ltd. in Vancouver, BC.

Callum Campbell Senior Naval Architect

Capilano Maritime is pleased to announce that Callum Campbell has recently joined our firm as Senior Naval Architect. Callum joins CMDL from BMT Fleet Technology in Vancouver, BC, where he held a position as Naval Architect. He was most recently the principal designer of the new aluminum catamaran passenger ferry SeaBus for Translink, currently under construction at Victoria Shipyards Co. Ltd.

Lori Woodman Marine Mechanical Engineering Student

Lori Woodman is a mechanical engineering student from the University of Victoria. She is part of UVic`s engineering co-op program and has joined Capilano Maritime for a 4-month work term.
