The client
Manitoba Infrastructure is responsible for the development of transportation policy and legislation, and for the management of the province’s vast infrastructure network. To meet these responsibilities, the department delivers a wide range of programs and services that play a critical role in sustaining the contributions of the transportation sector to Manitoba’s economic growth.
The brief
Capilano Maritime was hired to complete the detailed design package, including a comprehensive technical specification, for a 15 AEQ, 27.6m cable ferry for the Province of Manitoba. CMDL was retained to provide technical evaluation of the bid packages and to supervise the construction of the vessel. The Vessel was fabricated by Kinetic Machine Works Ltd of Selkirk, Manitoba.
The design
The 27.6m cable ferry can accommodate up to 49 passengers, and either 15 cars or a combination of semi-tractor/trailers and cars. The hull is designed to comply with ABS Ice Class B0 requirements. The ferry is equipped with two 3.6m ramps to load and unload vehicles from both ends and is powered by a 145kW John Deere 6068KF285 Engine through a Hydrostatic Pump and a Radial Piston Hydraulic Motor driving the single traction bullwheel.
The Vessel was designed according to and is certified by Transport Canada.
