The client
North Arm Transportation is a fully integrated, fuel supply, freight handling, and marine service company specializing in the movement of fuel and freight, and project support in the most isolated parts of the BC coast.
The brief
Capilano Maritime Design Ltd. (CMDL) was approached by North Arm Transportation Ltd. to study the feasibility of refitting an existing single-skin oil barge to comply with the revised Transport Canada Standard TP 11960E for double-hull fuel barges. The barge was originally designed to ABS class rules and was built by Vancouver Shipyards in 1994. It has been in operation since then transporting fuel and freight.
The project moved very quickly from concept to production of structural and mechanical details. CMDL navigated the project through a complex regulatory landscape while providing detailed drawings to the shipyard – Allied Shipbuilders Ltd. in North Vancouver, BC. CMDL worked with some of the top craftsmen and technical people in Vancouver to assist North Arm in building their fleet of deck cargo/oil barges.
The refitted North Arm Pioneer double hull fuel and deck cargo barge has been accepted into LR class. The whole design and construction project took five months.
